Metal oxide nanomaterials

Metal oxides stand out as a landmark in materials science due to their unique properties, widely exploited in basic research and technological applications. Among these materials, TiO2, ZnO, SnO2 and Fe3O4 are prime examples of multifunctionality, since these materials possess suitable electrical resistance combined with optical transparency in the most of visible spectrum. Also, metal oxide-based materials are recognized for outstanding surface related catalytic properties, leaving high impact on gas-sensing performance and broad applications in sensing technologies.
Our research activities are focused on development of various synthesis techniques, such as soft chemistry, nanocasting, as well as hydrothermal and templated methods for fabrication of metal oxide nanomaterials with tailored properties, suitable for application in advanced technologies.

The following step in the conducted research is to develop functional dispersions of metal oxide nanoparticles in the form of inks and pastes for printing on flexible and rigid substrates, with the final goal to design electrochemical gas sensors. Undertaken approach combines inkjet and screen-printing techniques for fabrication of sensor transducers and sensitive layers based on synthesized metal oxide materials. Integration of such technologies is achieved on flexible platforms such as paper and PET substrates, suitable for agri-food applications.
We also investigate laser post-processing of metal oxide nanomaterials, i.e. the effect of the laser irradiation on the morphology and structure of metal oxides such as crystallinity, porosity and roughness in order to increase and tune their contribution in gas sensing mechanisms.
