Maria Kireeva radi kao stariji istraživač u Centru za informacione tehnologije Instituta BioSense Univerziteta u Novom Sadu. Doktorirala je iz oblasti hidrologije, vodnih resursa i geohemije na Moskovskom državnom univerzitetu Lomonosov u aprilu 2013. Njena glavna istraživačka interesovanja su povezana sa hidrološkim ekstremima – sušama i poplavama, procenom resursa površinskih i podzemnih voda u uslovima promene klime, uključujući metode mašinskog učenja. i modeli zasnovani na podacima u hidrološkim istraživanjima i prognozama, analizama hidrološkog ponašanja na različitim skalama, kreiranju novih algoritama i razvoju softvera u geoprostornim analizama. Maria se takođe fokusira na upravljanje vodama u uslovima suše i optimizaciju regulacije rečnog oticaja.

Od jula 2013. do septembra 2023. Maria je bila zaposlena na Moskovskom državnom univerzitetu Lomonosov, prvo kao mlađi istraživač, a od 2020. godine kao vanredni profesor na Odseku za hidrologiju zemljišta Geografskog fakulteta u Moskvi, Rusija. Tokom ovog perioda, učestvovala je u više od 10 međunarodnih i ruskih nacionalnih projekata kao vođa projekta, glavni istraživač i učesnik. Njen rad obuhvatao je civilnu zaštitu od hidroloških opasnosti, upravljanje vodenim resursima u nestacionarnim klimatskim uslovima, analizu velikih podataka (big data) i primenu metoda mašinskog učenja za upravljanje rizikom i modeliranje zasnovano na podacima. Mariini doprinosi rezultirali su koautorstvom u publikacijama sa velikim uticajem u časopisima Nauka (2017) i Priroda (2019, 2022). Pored toga, Maria je bila pozvana u Komisiju za održivost vode (IGU) i koorganizovala je sesije u Evropskoj uniji geonauka (EGU) od 2018. do 2020. Aktivno je učestvovala u inicijativama Panta Rhei i FRIEND Međunarodnog udruženja hidroloških nauka (IAHS).

Pored toga, Maria ima veliko iskustvo na terenu. Organizovala je nekoliko ekspedicija za hidrološka istraživanja na Arktiku i Dalekom istoku Rusije, kao i terenske škole za studente kopnene hidrologije širom Evrope i Rusije. Trenutno, Mariin glavni istraživački interes obuhvata modeliranje hidroloških opasnosti, posebno suša i njihovih posledica, zasnovano na podacima. Fokusirana je na kreiranje sistema ranog upozorenja i algoritama za optimizaciju upravljanja vodnim resursima i regulacije oticanja, kao i na proučavanje interakcije između podzemnih i površinskih voda u nestacionarnoj klimi.
