Sustainable beekeeping
Sustainable beekeeping is emerging as a critical approach to safeguarding pollinator health while ensuring long-term ecosystem stability and agricultural productivity. Our research focuses on advancing this field through the application of portable membrane inlet mass spectrometry (MIMS) for real-time monitoring of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) within beehive atmospheres. By capturing the chemical fingerprint of the hive environment, this innovative in situ technique enables early detection of stressors such as environmental contamination, pathogen activity, and microclimatic imbalances. Unlike conventional methods, MIMS allows rapid, non-invasive analysis directly in the field, minimizing disturbance to bee colonies while providing high-resolution temporal data. Through integrating analytical chemistry with apicultural science, our work supports the development of smart, data-driven beekeeping practices that enhance colony resilience, optimize hive management, and contribute to more sustainable and environmentally responsible apiculture.
