IUCN Red List of species

The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) brings together over 13,000 scientists and experts, making it the largest global organization dedicated to nature conservation and sustainable use of resources. One of the main objectives of the IUCN is to assess the risk of extinction of plant and animal species worldwide.

In 2018, part of the team from the BioSense Institute participated in the formation of the Hoverfly Specialist Group , which represent the second most important group of pollinating insects, both in natural ecosystems and in agriculture. We are actively working on creating the European Red List of Hoverflies, which will be the most comprehensive list and analysis of the regional level of vulnerability of this important group of pollinators. Within this project, we estimate the status of almost 1000 species of hoverflies recorded in Europe. The Red List of Hoverflies will enable to better understand the most important threats that endanger the survival of these species, but it will also contain recommendations for their conservation.
