Irrigation canals

We developed and validated a portable membrane inlet mass spectrometer (MIMS) for real-time detection of dangerous volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in irrigation canals. These emerging contaminants pose significant risks to agricultural resources. Our instrument matches the performance of conventional equipment, such as GC-MS, but offers the distinct advantage of continuous, in situ monitoring without sample preparation. Capable of detecting toxic species like BTX and chlorinated hydrocarbons with a response time in seconds, it serves as an ideal early-warning screening tool. This approach ensures sustainable protection for vital water resources and supports efficient environmental management in agricultural systems.
