Novel Active Ingredients for Health- and Enviroment-friendly UV-Blocking Based on Enriched Organosilica Nanomaterials

Implementation period: 29/09/2020 - 29/09/2021

GA number: 5566

Type of Project: National

Project aim: The project aims at developing novel organosilica nanoparticles (NPs) as potent blocking agents for UVA and UVB irradiation in sunscreen products. Novel NPs will be synthesized and characterized, demonstrating stable, efficient, and safe UVA and UVB blocking ability.

About the project: These new nanoparticles would present a safer alternative (both regarding health and the environment) to the currently used active ingredients in sunscreens. Majority of sunscreen products on the market currently use either TiO2 and ZnO nanoparticles or organic blockers. However, there is an increasing concern regarding the adverse health and environmental effects of these sunscreen ingredients, especially upon exposure to UV irradiation which causes production of highly destructive reactive oxygen species and lowers their UV protection ability. Our solution to the problem is construction of biocompatible organosilica NPs with high SPF (≥ 50), broad spectrum (UVA + UVB) and stable sunscreen agents upon exposure to irradiation.

This project is funded by the Innovation Fund within the program named „Proof of Concept“ designed for researchers who require support to prove that there is a new product, emerged from research and for which there is a need in the market.
