Project goal:

MOBIFREE aims to:

  • Strengthen European digital sovereignty by advancing human-centred, ethical, and open-source mobile software as alternatives to dominant closed ecosystems;
  • Scale up open mobile technologies through co-creation and piloting with key end-user sectors, improving quality, privacy, and interoperability;
  • Reinforce Europe’s open mobile software ecosystem by fostering collaboration, supporting sustainable business models, and creating new market opportunities for pro-privacy solutions.

Project description: MOBIFREE responds to the dominance of closed, data-driven mobile ecosystems controlled by a small number of non-European technology providers. These ecosystems rely on proprietary standards, extensive data collection, and business models that create user lock-in and market monopolization. The project brings together Europe’s leading organizations in open-source mobile technologies to strengthen digital sovereignty and develop human-centred, ethical, and privacy-preserving alternatives. Building on the outcomes of the Next Generation Internet (NGI) programme, MOBIFREE aims to scale up open mobile software across the ecosystem. Through co-creation and piloting with four key end-user sectors, MOBIFREE will improve the quality, privacy, interoperability, and openness of mobile technologies. The project will deliver greater digital freedom for citizens and organizations, while creating sustainable business opportunities for Europe’s pro-privacy and open-source mobile software ecosystem.

BioSense role on the project:

BIOS identifies emerging business and sustainability opportunities based on societal, economic, and political developments, enabling the timely recognition of potential for the advancement of ethical and open mobile technologies. Within the project, we develop the Fair Software Business Development Kit, designed to support startups in scaling their business models and sustainability strategies. In addition, we establish the MOBIFREE human-centred business accelerator, which provides structured support to software startups. Through these activities, BioSense Institute supports leading innovators, SMEs, and startups in strengthening their business readiness, long-term sustainability, and market impact. In this way, we ensure that ethical and open mobile technologies are not only developed, but also successfully scaled and sustained within the European market.
