What does it mean to pursue a career in science today, and what motivates individuals to follow this path? In the contemporary research landscape, the answer increasingly extends beyond disciplinary boundaries, encompassing a broader societal dimension – from understanding technology to ensuring its responsible application.

Researchers at the BioSense Institute, Dr Oskar Marko and Dr Georges Dubourg, offer insights into different yet interconnected aspects of modern scientific work.

Dr Marko’s research focuses on artificial intelligence, particularly on making complex technological concepts more interpretable and applicable in real-world contexts. At a time when AI is often framed through simplified and sometimes misleading narratives, his work emphasizes the importance of understanding underlying processes, limitations, and the responsibility that comes with its use. His contribution lies not only in advancing technology but also in improving how it is communicated and understood by a broader audience.

In parallel, Dr Georges Dubourg’s work is centered on translating scientific discoveries into practical biomedical applications. His research highlights critical, often less visible stages of development – including validation, testing, and optimization – which are essential for ensuring reliability and readiness for real-world use. It is within this transition from laboratory research to applied solutions that trust in innovation is built.

Although their research fields differ, both perspectives converge on a shared understanding of science as a process that goes beyond discovery alone. Today, science entails responsibility, transparent communication, and the continuous building of trust between researchers and society.

These perspectives were presented as part of the “Open Studio Europe” initiative, organized by the Delegation of the European Union to Serbia, aimed at bringing contemporary research closer to the wider public.
