Insect Ecology

Insects are a vital component of both natural ecosystems and agricultural food production. Most wild plant species and crops are used for food worldwide rely on insect pollination services. Varying levels of specialism of different groups of insects make them environmentally and economically important. In addition to maintaining agricultural productivity, they may serve as bioindicators of environmental stress, habitat quality and landscape changes, and they may act as decomposers of organic waste. Some groups of insects are pests, but others may find their use in biological control of pests or weeds. Taking into account enormous diversity of important ecological roles of insects, we focus our research towards the synergy of basic ecology of insects and applied entomology.
